Paul O’DwyerPaul O’Dwyer, a native of Cahir, Co. Tipperary, Ireland graduated (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) from University College Cork in 1997. His University undergraduate career saw him elected Class President & Auditor (President) of the University Dental Society. Awarded an undergraduate research grant, Paul’s scientific paper on Enamel Microstructure was published in the Journal of the International Association of Dental Research. In 1995, his work also received the prestigious Crest Undergraduate Research Award. On graduation, Paul initially worked as a House Officer at Cork Dental Hospital – involved with the on-call rota for Oral & Maxillofacial unit. Two years of general practice in England was followed by one year post-graduate study & lecturing in UCC.
From 2000 to 2010, he successfully ran his own general dental practice in Co Tipperary. During this time, he was elected President of the North Munster Branch of the Irish Dental Association, appointed Examining Dentist with the Health Service Executive & inducted as a Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy.
In January 2012, Paul was appointed Group Clinical Director at Smiles Dental. This role was the first of its kind, before Paul various dentists within Smiles had sections of this a multifaceted role. Paul now oversees the implementation of protocol & policy directives from the Dental Council of Ireland with regard to the practice of dentistry in Ireland. Paul also reviews & implements protocols that are in line with best practice internationally. The role underpins the high levels of training, expertise & patient care that Smiles Dental Group has established. The Group Clinical Director is responsible for ensuring that the patient’s needs, requirements & treatment are fulfilled to the highest standard. Paul travels to each of the 17 Smiles Clinics nationwide throughout the year & is constantly reviewing new thinking on dental materials & methods – ensuring that patients receive best practice care.
Paul is also a regular contributor to The Irish Times, Health Plus, Paul’s “Word of Mouth” column was the first of its kind in Ireland & he appears on RTE2fm from time to time talking about current dental legislation & answers callers questions.
